Hi! I'm Maribeth, an EMDR Certified Therapist, and I'm glad you've found me! It's so important to feel a sense of connection with a therapist. My philosophy is simple - I believe that we are all born as divine lights of the universe, but that through the course of our lives we are given messages through the words or acts of others, or sometimes even ourselves, that impact how we see ourselves and the world. My style of therapy focuses on helping people change those messages to reflect the true nature of each of us - one of wholeness. Therapy, to me, is walking the path with someone as they journey towards their awakening.
As an EMDR Certified Clinician with over ten years of experience, this is my primary method of treatment. I work with religious trauma, addictions, and complex trauma with adults wishing to resolve childhood abuse. However, any adverse life event, or series of events, that create a negative message about who we are can be addressed using EMDR. My style is casual, friendly, and warm. When you are in my office, I want you to know that I have a genuine interest in helping you heal.
What is EMDR?
EMDR, short for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, is a therapeutic approach designed to alleviate distress associated with traumatic memories or experiences. It was developed by Francine Shapiro in the late 1980s and has since gained recognition as an effective method for treating various mental health issues.
How does EMDR work?
During an EMDR session, a trained therapist guides the individual through a structured process that involves recalling distressing memories while simultaneously focusing on external stimuli. This often includes the therapist directing the person's eye movements through tracking their fingers or using other bilateral stimulation techniques like taps or sounds.
The hypothesis behind EMDR is that these bilateral stimulations help the brain process traumatic memories that have not been adequately processed in the past. By engaging in these rapid back-and-forth eye movements or other bilateral stimulation, the therapy aims to reduce the emotional charge associated with the distressing memories, allowing the individual to reprocess them in a more adaptive and less distressing way.
What can EMDR help with?
EMDR has been researched and utilized to address a wide range of issues, including:
Is EMDR effective?
Numerous studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of EMDR in reducing symptoms related to trauma and other mental health concerns. Many individuals report significant improvements in their symptoms and overall well-being after undergoing EMDR therapy.
Is EMDR right for me?
EMDR is a therapeutic approach that offers hope and relief to individuals struggling with the emotional aftermath of distressing experiences. It's essential to seek a qualified and trained therapist experienced in EMDR to undergo this therapy effectively and safely.
If you're considering EMDR therapy, contact Many Paths Counseling to determine if it's a suitable option for your specific needs and circumstances.

Attending therapy for the first time, or meeting with a new therapist for the first time, can create some anxiety. At Many Paths Counseling, I want your first experience with me to be as relaxed and comfortable as possible, so there are no long assessments, and we don't have to talk about anything you're uncomfortable with. I'll usually ask what brought you to therapy and how I can help. I'm interested in you and your own unique story.
If you decide you'd like to try therapy with me, there will be some initial paperwork to complete through your client portal on my Electronic Health Record, Simple Practice. This will be set up for you, and all documents can be signed online.
Individual therapy sessions are typically 50 minutes long, however, I do offer extended sessions of two hours. I am also able to offer some limited intensive appointments of three hours or more. We will assess your specific needs at our first visit, and these can always be adjusted at any time during your therapeutic journey.
Therapy sessions are 120.00 per session. For extended appointments, it is a simple multiplication of the standard fee. For your convenience, payments are made through your client portal and you can pay them manually or set up autopay. At our first session, we will complete a Good Faith Estimate that will provide you with an idea about the overall cost for therapy for the duration of treatment.
Beginning March 1st, I will begin accepting some limited insurance plans through Alma. If I am not in network with your insurance provider, I can provide a document that you can file towards your out of network benefits if you have them. There is no guarantee of reimbursement. You can also use your Health Savings Account to cover the cost of sessions.
My office is located in the Rountree Neighborhood in a beautiful, historical building known casually as "The Bentley Building". It was built in 1918, and was originally a hospital. There is parking in the back, on the west side, or on the street. You're welcome to come in the front door, but many people prefer to come in the glass door on the west side of the building. If you choose that path, you'll come up the stairs and my hallway is on the right.
